Studies for the Clinical Effect of Meclifenamate Sodium(Meclomen)

Abstract
Meclofenamate sodium, a derivative of anthranilic acid, has been shown in various animal studies to be a potent nonsteroid antiinflammatory drug with analgesic and antipyretic prop
erties. It acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis and blocking the action of formed prostaglandin at receptor sites.
Double blind clinical studies have shown Meclofenamate sodium to be effective and well-tolerated in the management of rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative arthritis, and ankylosing
spondylitis.
In 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative arthritis, the efficacy and safety of Meclofenamate sodium was evaluated during 10 months from October, 1988 to July, 1989.
The results were obtained as follows:
1) According the diagnosis, rheumatoid arthritis were 15 cases (37.5%) and degenerative
arthritis were 25 cases(62.5%).
2) In rheumatoid arthritis, male were 3 cases (20%) and female were 12 cases (80%) and the highest incidence was in 4th decade.
In degenerative arthritis, male were 2 cases (8%) and female were 23 cases (92% ; and the
highest incidence was in 6th decade.
3) There was improvement in global assessment, pain on movement, pain at night and joint stiffness.
4) There was no significant difference between pre and post-treatment laboratory values. 5) In rheumatoid arthritis, 13 cases showed good or fair result (87%) and 20 cases showed
good or fair result (80%) in degenerative arthritis.
In conclusion, Meclofenamate sodium is effective and safe for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative arthritis but in aspect of clinical improvement more effective in
rheumatoid arthritis.
